...never seen before such a thing :mellow: .. the fact of a PL-55 marked plug shows clearly it's a AAF-made item.

The PL-179 male terminal was for a direct plugging into the radio set, as it was fot the British-made radios. Many modifications including this one, were made to AAF fighter planes operating from England

(just sold out one of these T-44 assemblies a few days ago).

interesting! Will have to go searching for this - do not understand why that PL-55 plug, at the opposite end from that other large connector.

Maybe someone else on the Forum could have any answer?!?

The large plug is the "female part " of the RAF bell Type plug Franco ,if that helps ??

If so, thus the PL-179 plug (RAF-style) didn't go directly into the aircraft setup - as I instead read in many a text.

 

At this point, must think: the PL-179 plug (already in itself a good convenience being a single unit, for both helmet and mask's cables) connected into its female counterpart, wich definitely stayed inside the cockpit.

At the other end was the PL-55, wich plugged into the radio box in the same way would have done the standard AAF helmet's extension cord. Pilots exiting the cockpits simply pulled out the large PL-179, and those much shorter adapters stayed inside.

The only answer in my opinion ??

Hi,

The cord CD-176 allow the use of the microphone T-44 or MC-233 only, not the earphones. It is the equivalent without the switch (SW-141) of the cords CD-318 and CD-508 used with the T-30 micophone (PL-291). The PL-55 jack is designed to be plugged on an US transmitter, the PL-54 and PL-354 jacks to the receiver depending the impedence.

Hi Carl,

 

Read CD-716 and not CD-176 :)

This adaptor stayed inside the cockpit plugged into the radio box of the SCR-274N radio set for exemple (here in a P-38).

You can find a british version of the CD-716 with the british female plug and an equivalent of the PL-55 plug, in red with the AM marks stamped on it. I think it is for RAF pilots flying in american aircraft like P-40 or P-38 ...

So could this cord be used for a RAF c type helmet with Raf receivers and a type A14 mask with mic to be used in an USAAF aircraft ??

I make a mistake when I say that . :blush: The CD-716 allows to use the earphones and not the microphone. It is the equivalent of the extension cord CD-307. It is the PL-68 plug which equips the US microphones.

 

So, yes you can use it with a RAF C type helmet with RAF receivers and a type A14 mask.

Carl the C type would have to have either a standard RAF loom or the 2186 series parallel though as we talked about in order to use the Bell plug .
