That is positively medieval in both concept and appearance. It's described in one of Sweeting's books. Didn't get beyond the experimental stage as it was found to be both cumbersome and uncomfortable to wear. No surprises there then! :o

it does look like a midieval appearance, the thick woolen collar on his leather bomber jacket also looks like it would also protect the neck from shrapnel

 

Ive been in a B17 bomber before and the body is made of paper thin sheets of aluminum riveted together , flak would go through like punching holes through paper
