Guest TANKER75 Posted July 13, 2008 Share #51 Posted July 13, 2008 my uncle was a MARINE CORP PARATROOPER during ww11 , and carried a johnson rifle on GUADALCANAL, WAS WOUNDED ON BLOODY RIDGE and is mentioned in a book by JAMES F. CHRIST titled BATTALION OF THE DAMNED. MY uncle was a member of 1ST PARACHUTE BATTALION 1ST MARINE DIVISION , C COMPANY. HE was one of 23 marines there to carry a johnson rifle, someday i going to own one. he was later killed in action on IWO JIMA 19FEB45. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE TO SPEAK TO MANY OF HIS FRIENDS WHO WERE ON GUADALCANAL WITH HIM.AND ARE ALSO MENTIONED IN THE BOOK. EVERYTIME I SEE A JOHNSON RIFLE I THINK OF MY UNCLE AND WHAT HE MUST HAVE WENT THROUGH. I SHOULD NOT THINK OF HIM AS GONE BECUASE OF WHAT MARINES SAY, "ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE" THEY ARE ALL GREAT WARRIORS!

J_Andrews Posted July 19, 2008 Share #59 Posted July 19, 2008 About 25 years ago, a guy offered me a Johnson that was finished in black paint, apparently baked on and an arsenal or depot product. He told me that it was one of a few hundred Johnsons that had been en route to the Dutch East Indies but delivery was frustrated, leaving them in Australian hands. Further, because they were so non-standard (US .30 caliber) they were relegated to the RAAF and used mostly for guard duty, in Australia and then as the war progressed wherever the RAAF might be. He THOUGHT that they had equipped some (RAAF?) personnel on Occupation in Japan after V-J and he THOUGHT the one he was offering had been quasi-FTR'd in the late 1940s, hence refinished a la Anglais. Anyone out there know anything like this? BTW I passed, as he wanted too much for this RARERARERARE item.
