Cobra 6 Actual Posted January 22 Share #776 Posted January 22 This is on eBay now: The usual wiggly engraving and artificial aging. First time I’ve seen a fake Cambodian Zippo. The seller only wants $300. Two other points of note: 1) There are no pictures of the bottom of the lighter with the Zippo patent number and the date code, and 2) Zippo didn’t make brass lighters until 1982, long after the end of the Vietnam War. Oh, and also US units never penetrated into Cambodia as far as Phnom Penh when we entered in 1970. Please tell your lighter collector friends not to waste their money on this one! mtnman Posted January 31 Share #779 Posted January 31 Cobra, is it a Zippo and what year is it? Maybe a picture of the bottom? I know that's a Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), I just wonder when the guy was there so I get the full effect of the lighter! Thanks man!
Cobra 6 Actual Posted January 31 Share #780 Posted January 31 Thanks, jmd62 and mtnman. The lighter is a 2022, last year. MCAS Iwakuni is still in operation. During WWII it was a Japanese naval air base. After the war it seemed like most of our allies and the US made an appearance there: the UK, Australia, New Zealand as well as our Army, AAF, Navy, and Marines. Cobra 6 Actual Posted February 5 Share #781 Posted February 5 He was Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps from 1969 to 1973. The “real deal”, a three-war Marine who earned the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Combat V, and more.

Cobra 6 Actual Posted February 5 Share #783 Posted February 5 Thanks, mtnman. I’m not usually a “fan” of the slim style Zippos, but the backstory of his service was pretty compelling!
mtnman Posted February 5 Share #784 Posted February 5 I would not have missed that one either Cobra... One of a kind find!

easterneagle87 Posted February 11 Share #786 Posted February 11 Got this Vulcan in an antique store yesterday. HEDRON, FLEET MARINE FORCE ATLANTIC is HEDRON a name or a unit descriptor?
Cobra 6 Actual Posted February 11 Share #787 Posted February 11 I believe that “HEDRON” is the naval shortening of “Helicopter Squadron”, EE87.

You nailed it man! What an awesome find! Thanks so much for sharing EE! And Cobra, that map is fantastic. The map was done in the actual Zippo manufacturing, correct? Cobra 6 Actual Posted February 11 Share #789 Posted February 11 Yep, that’s correct, mtnman. And EE87, a correction: that’s “Headquarters Squadron”:

Are they a stylized "22" ??
Cobra 6 Actual Posted March 3 Share #799 Posted March 3 Here’s a fake Vietnam Zippo currently on eBay for $98: Where to start? The usual wobbly letters with black paint. The “U.S.C.G” with the missing final period (this is a European style of punctuation, such as the French taught the Vietnamese). Or the massively egregious error of a US Naval Officer’s insignia on a supposed Coast Guard lighter. And, how did those artificial “aged” rub marks occur above that Naval insignia? And more errors on the reverse: The missing apostrophe in the word “Charlies”. The usual wobbly letters with black paint. The two periods after the word “Coast”, which are supposed to be the three dots of an ellipsis. The artificial aging. The mis-location of Vung Tau (it should be way down the coast just off from where Saigon is).
