Championhilz Posted October 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks to my good friend Siege1863, who spotted this beauty and tipped me off, I picked up this "My Life in the Service" book that belonged to Sergeant Lawrence N. Yarling, who served in the 819th Tank Destroyer Battalion. The 819th served in the Pacific, and received one campaign credit for the Western Pacific (Peleliu). Yarling had the members of his crew sign his book: In addition to the men from the 819th, there are also messages from men in the 612th, 638th, 812th, 814th, 820th, and 822nd tank destroyer battalions while they were training at Camp Hood. All told, there are messages from about 75 men in the book - it was a great find for $8!
pwdickens76 Posted October 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2013 If it's not too much trouble is there any way you could look for a name for me. I have been researching my grandfathers service in WWII. He received his training in the Tank Destroyers as well. He was sent to te Philippine Islands as well but I have very little information on him and the NARA had only his discharge papers that were incomplete. His name was Vernon Little, Jr. Thanks
Championhilz Posted October 10, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted October 10, 2013 Hi, I checked my list, but did not find your grandfather. I also checked a detailed roster of the 819th at tankdestroyer.net, but did not find him there either. Sorry I could not be of more help.
