usaaf93 Posted September 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2013 Hello What do you think about this harness ? It is dated 1942. I think it it a seat parachute harness. For what kind of parachute would it be ? AN 6510 or AN 6511 ? Thanks
WWII Parachutist Posted September 21, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 21, 2013 Placement of ripcord housing and ripcord pocket would indicate a back parachute. The only USAF back harness in this style would be the B-8. However, the canvas chest guards on the chest strap are absent, and the risers look awful long, almost like a seat harness. Gut feeling is a seat harness that was switched to a back type, possibly for civilian use. Can you locate the part number? If you can measure the length of the risers I can check it against my original chutes.
usaaf93 Posted September 21, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted September 21, 2013 Thanks for your answer. The risers are 42 inches long. I don t get what s wrong with the ripcord pocket. I have seen seat parachutes with the pocket placed in this place. thanks again
WWII Parachutist Posted September 25, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 25, 2013 After looking at the harness again, I realized you are correct. The harness is pictured rather oddly and I thought the housing was tacked up by the chest strap, when it in fact is tacked at the bottom where it should be for a seat pack. If it had been tacked at the top it would indicate a back type parachute such as the B-8.
