jgawne Posted September 19, 2013 Share #26 Posted September 19, 2013 But see? Here you guys get talking about unreality shows, hence whatever it was worked. While most people watch them thinking the are real (or realish), there are the others that watch them to see what stupid stuff they will be up to, and (like me) yell at the TV). With pickers I find I am generally more interested in just seeing the 'stuff' at the places they go. The junk in the background that they have no clue about. History Man Posted September 20, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 20, 2013 I do have a question regarding this show...why are they on top of the building in the beginning? I never understood that and it is somewhat strange... Philip
ScottG Posted September 20, 2013 Share #28 Posted September 20, 2013 Rick Harrison tries to talk like he knows about each item off the top of his head, then always has that stupid laugh "the reason they did this was because, yada yada, etc, and thats why it's like that" then he laughs sound like he just read about it on the internet and repeats it, but he tries to act like he knows about everything and how it was made , etc Rick actually does a fairly convincing job when he gives his opinion, trying to watch his idiot dumb@*@ kid just gets my blood pressure up. It is so obvious he is reading from a teleprompter or card that it makes me sick. But getting back on topic, I refuse to watch this excuse for entertainment anymore, but last I saw Craig Gottleib was the "let me call a buddy" military/gun expert. Did he do the appraisal on this item? No intent to bash him, just curious who the expert was and I don't want to suffer through the show to find out. ColdWarRules Posted September 20, 2013 Share #29 Posted September 20, 2013 I would also like to point out PS doesn't have a great understanding of collectors. If I remember correctly a WW1 Marine helmet walked into the shop (EGA and paint) and after the appraisal and yada yada yada Rick said "Its not in good condition, it'd be hard to find a collector". They don't understand that that's *@#$ gold and half of this site would want it. -Nick
manayunkman Posted September 20, 2013 Share #30 Posted September 20, 2013 The only thing that really annoys me is that Big Hoss always says "My man". He will shake some ones hand, will say "Thanks my man" and never looks the person in the eye. He always looks away. Nick, Look at it this way: next one of those helmets that comes up you can quote Rick and use it to your advantage. I always quote those shows when I can use it to my advantage. It's a double edged sword.
claymore Posted September 20, 2013 Share #31 Posted September 20, 2013 Yeah-I know what you mean. Pawn Stars are really slimey rips. But what do you want from a pawn broker. I just get sick when some really exotic, rare piece comes in, like the Iwo Jima maps, the only thing that is on their mind is how much money it can make them. And Rick stupid looks when the sellers are trying to decide if they want to be robbed. That stare and greasy smile. They need a history lesson and get better "experts". The LAST place I would bring anything would be this place. I quit watching cause I got tired of the B.S. claymore
zotig111 Posted September 20, 2013 Share #32 Posted September 20, 2013 Claymore, I can't agree more that the reason I stopped watching Pawn Stars was the BS. Most of the show outside the fake deals is them talking smack about each other. They seem to have a target of the week that rotates through to increase the "drama" factor. Pick on Rick for his hair, chumley being stupid or lazy, the old man being cranky, etc. This trend has bled into the other A&E company shows. Storage wars (any version) is now 12 minutes of commercials, 14 minutes of talking smack on how I am the king of the auction, 3 minutes of reruning the last scene before the commercial (for those with severe short term memory loss) and 1 minute of actual "education" on the finds (planted items). I almost hate to say this but I would rather watch Gilligan's Island and Hogan's Heroes reruns than this crapola. At least those two shows twist history on purpose. manayunkman Posted September 20, 2013 Share #33 Posted September 20, 2013 Zot, Your take is really funny but so true. Now that you put it that way the shows are a 25 min. waste. That just might change viewing habits.

38Driver Posted September 21, 2013 Share #35 Posted September 21, 2013 I saw that show one time. A guy brought a painted 82nd FG A2 jacket in. History Man Posted September 21, 2013 Share #36 Posted September 21, 2013 I saw that show one time. A guy brought a painted 82nd FG A2 jacket in. The guy in the shop proceeds to tell him that P38s didn't fly in Italy. I changed the station fast I remember that one, blew my mind and was shocked at the entire segment of it too. Especially when the man left the shop with the jacket, claiming that he has documents and would bring him $10,000.... I find it interesting how the History Channel is either airing shows of the impending Apocolypse or this staged BS. Discovery Channel lost me awhile ago due to the huge spike in content revolving around shows like "Tickle," "Swamp Loggers," "Amish Mafia," "Backyard Oil".....and the like. I'd like to know what happened to all of the informative shows besides all of these reality TV shows A family friend once told my mother (back in the 1980's) that good, quality TV will be replaced by reality TV and the like....looks like he saw the future. manayunkman Posted September 21, 2013 Share #37 Posted September 21, 2013 The only reality TV we had was the news or Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom before Disney Sunday nights. Those were some dysfunctional animals
zotig111 Posted September 23, 2013 Share #38 Posted September 23, 2013 Manayunkman, Don't forget the Mickey Mouse Club (the one with Annette, not Britney). Does that count as a Disney reality show?! It's all been downhill since then...

Ricardo Posted September 23, 2013 Share #41 Posted September 23, 2013 BBC tv has a long history of specialist antiques shows. The longest running is "Antiques Roadshow" which goes back over 25 years and is still as popular as ever....and whose format has been "borrowed" by US tv. There are also daily antiques shows such as "Bargain Hunt" and "Flog it!" ( flog is British slang for "sell") The upshot of all this exposure to the world of antiques means that everyone is now an "expert" of sorts because it has raised awareness of the value of certain items. That vase on grandma's table isn't just a vase anymore, it's a piece by Moorecroft dating from 1895 and worth approx £150 - £200 at auction....know what I mean? This heightened awareness of value filters through to the everyday buying and selling of antiques. Unscrupulous dealers can no longer offer a derisory £20 for grandma's vase because the family now know what it is and what it's really worth. Same principle applies in the wake of shows such as "Pawn..." and "....Pickers" (which are both screened in the UK too, by the way) I remember an episode of this british show who appeared a lady with a WW1 Victoria Cross with documentation to be evaluated! I just see a few guys making observations about a show most say they cannot stand to watch. I think that the Remote control Fairy came along and threw fairy dust on everybody's remote and it will not allow them to change channels. So they are stuck watching Rick and the boys trying to overpay, underpay, grandstand and turn down the good stuff. If Pawnstars has a Wikipedia button it is wore smooth from use. I watch it. Sometimes interesting and at other times boring. I do this daily and what is not shown...B-D drills, dirty microwaves, broke anything, fake gold and mostly folk down on their luck trying to get a little help... Stony Posted September 28, 2013 Share #46 Posted September 28, 2013 I love the one where the guy brings in the A-2 that was worn by a hump pilot. The old man says this is a "hump" jacket and I'm sure if it was worn by someone flying a B-17 or B-24 he would have called it a "bomber" jacket. I also remember when Big Hoss bought the leather flight helmet for $250 when IMO they're worth about $75 on a good day. Has anyone been in there lately and seen any of the military items they've bought up for sale? I would love to go in there and play "role reversal" and beat them down on whatever prices they have for their military stuff. It would be good clean American fun and it might end up working, lol.
