MWalsh Posted September 17, 2013 #1 Posted September 17, 2013 I came across this cannon at a park in northeast Iowa. I drove past and thought hmmmm.... looks like a.... cannon? So I drove back and stopped and got some pics. I did not see any obvious markings on it, but the hornets nesting in it and buzzing around while I took pics kept me from looking more closely. Sadly, it is not in the bext of shape, but does look mainly intact. I think. Anyone know what this thing is? MW
manayunkman Posted September 17, 2013 #11 Posted September 17, 2013 Looks like an anti aircraft gun and the barrel is no longer in its forward position. Thanks for posting.
Sabrejet Posted September 17, 2013 #12 Posted September 17, 2013 I think it might be a captured Japanese Type 88 AA gun.
Sabrejet Posted September 17, 2013 #14 Posted September 17, 2013 It's displayed in transit mode with it gun tube retracted and on its wheeled carriage.
manayunkman Posted September 17, 2013 #15 Posted September 17, 2013 Somebody needs to get that thing inside and fixed up.
Sabrejet Posted September 17, 2013 #16 Posted September 17, 2013 This one is apparently "preserved" somewhere in Wisconsin.
Cobrahistorian Posted September 17, 2013 #17 Posted September 17, 2013 Yep, Ian's got it. Japanese Type 88 75mm AA gun.
Sabrejet Posted September 17, 2013 #18 Posted September 17, 2013 BTW..."88" does not refer to its caliber like the German flak 88. It's actually 75mm.
The Meatcan Posted September 17, 2013 #19 Posted September 17, 2013 MW, thanks for posting this unusual monument! I'm curious though, whereabouts in NE Iowa did you find this? I was born and raised in those cornfields but don't recall ever seeing anything like this. thanks, Terry
manayunkman Posted September 17, 2013 #21 Posted September 17, 2013 Hope the ATF doesn' see this.... Bob, I don't follow ?
Bob Hudson Posted September 17, 2013 #22 Posted September 17, 2013 Bob, I don't follow ? I know that if I put a piece of breech loading artillery in my front yard, someone official would want to see some paperwork. "a destructive device is a type of firearm or explosive device regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934...Examples of destructive devices include grenades, and firearms with a bore over one half of an inch" (muzzle loaders excluded).
Bugme Posted September 17, 2013 #23 Posted September 17, 2013 This one is apparently "preserved" somewhere in Wisconsin. Yup, I believe that area is a little bit South of Milwaukee and a little North of Chicago on I-94.
manayunkman Posted September 17, 2013 #24 Posted September 17, 2013 That's only if you want one privately ? These are in public places ? I don't know what the law is pertaining to these.
BROBS Posted September 17, 2013 #25 Posted September 17, 2013 I'm positive they must have deactivated it in some way. Where in NE Iowa? I live near NE Iowa. -Brian
