A-4 PARACHUTE

We just received an A-4 parachute manufactured by the J. G Menihan Co. of Rochester, NY. It is the RAF style with the quick release. It appears to be unused (the shoulder straps are still tacked together.) We are completing a heavy bomber creman mannequin and will be adding the chute and harness. Before doing so, however we would like to know if anyone has any information as to exactly how they were worn? We assume that we will have to cut the tacks on the shoulders but before we do, we thought we would ask. Military History Society of Rochester

Don't cut the tags on the shoulders... They were ripped off when the airmand deployed the chute...

The rings on the pack are actually the end rings to which the shroud lines of the canopy are attached...

When deployed, the canopy goes upwards, with the shroud lines at full length ripping the hooks and risers from the main harness taking the empty pack above the wearer's head in the process...

Below is my crewman setup with a USAAF A4 pack in combination with a British Observer's Type harness as issued to the USAAF in WW2. The US A4 harness was based on the British design.. Note the straps between the leg setup...
