jkash23686 Posted August 22, 2013 #6 Posted August 22, 2013 Thats a Flak helmet not a talker. Looks pretty good. Whats the inside look like?
Garandy Posted August 22, 2013 Author #9 Posted August 22, 2013 I meant FLAK helmet, I had one before..paint look good?
Bugme Posted August 22, 2013 #12 Posted August 22, 2013 It's legit but, seeing that OD green clamp on the chinstrap makes me wonder if this wasn't a reissue used by tankers during the Korean War.
5thwingmarty Posted August 22, 2013 #14 Posted August 22, 2013 Actually its an M5 flak helmet with the longer more pointed ear flaps. I'm not sure if these had leather chin straps or cloth ones originally.
LarryM3 Posted August 23, 2013 #15 Posted August 23, 2013 The M5 flak helmet was considered as a replacement for the Rawlings Pattern tank helmet of WWII along with the M4A2 flak helmet. Both were eventually rejected as the official replacement but when the Korean War started there were not enough Rawlings Pattern tank helmets available so tank units going to Korea were given any of the three mentioned helmets. The green clamps and the absence of flocking on the helmet could indicate use by armored personnel but could also be one that was issued to aircrew in Korea and repaired or modified, hard to say for sure.
