Terry K. Posted August 21, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2013 I hit an antique store today that never has anything and came out with this, my first. Type K-1 Cap, Flighing Nurses, Very Light. Looks like it never had a nurses insignia on it but 1st Lt. bar looks like it has been on there forever. Yours, Terry

cutiger83 Posted August 22, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 22, 2013 Very nice! I have never seen one of these. It could be the lighting but the piping looks almost black and gold instead of green. What color is the piping on the cap? ....Kat

Terry K. Posted August 22, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted August 22, 2013 Thanks Kat & doyler, I know I have never owned one and I have been doing this for 50 years. Kat, piping is black and gold for officer. Terry
cutiger83 Posted August 22, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 22, 2013 Kat, piping is black and gold for officer. Terry Thanks for letting me know. Makes sense it would have been for an officer and not a WAAC. This is great to see. Thanks again for posting it.....Kat
Bugme Posted August 22, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 22, 2013 First one I've ever seen also!
Lee Ragan Posted August 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 22, 2013 Thanks for letting me know. Makes sense it would have been for an officer and not a WAAC. This is great to see. Thanks again for posting it.....Kat WAAC's had officers too. All officers below the rank of Brigadier General wore black & gold trim. Only enlisted wore branch-of-service color trim. This applies to both males and females.
manayunkman Posted August 22, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 22, 2013 I have never seen a woman's overseas hat in that form. The markings in it are beautiful. Was this form for Flight Nurses only or is it something used by all WAC officer's ? Very nice find.
Terry K. Posted August 22, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted August 22, 2013 I believe for flight nurses only but who knows what got given to other women. I thought it was unusual that it looks to be an issue piece, "Proerty, U.S.Army, Air Forces" Terry

US Victory Museum Posted August 23, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 23, 2013 Nice find, Terry K. I've only seen a handfull (fewer than seven) listed.sold on Ebay since 2007. It is a rare accessory for a rare uniform. Please note: this does not accompany the K-1 Flight Suit , which is for males and has nothing to do with nursing, but it is intended for the K-1 Flight Blouse & Trousers combination that were tailored for women (i.e. the shoulders were padded / had removable padding, and the trousers had side opening zippers.) Our resident Forum femme fatale, Justine62, has hers posted at the link below: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/134378-my-uniform-flight-nurse-type-k-1/ Additional information may be found at Katy's site: http://www.blitzkriegbaby.de/homepage.htm From there navigate to ANC (Top Right), III. Uniforms (Top Right) Flight Nurse Attire (5th Down) and then scroll down with your mouse wheel. Enclosed is a photo from her site. Mike
memphis_belle Posted August 23, 2013 Share #13 Posted August 23, 2013 I have never seen a woman's overseas hat in that form. The markings in it are beautiful. Was this form for Flight Nurses only or is it something used by all WAC officer's ? Very nice find. It was worn by Flight Nurses only. WAAC / WAC (Women's Army Corps) and ANC (Army Nurse Corps) were totally different organizations. Congratulations on your find!
Terry K. Posted August 23, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted August 23, 2013 memphis_belle, Thanks. Mike, Thanks much. I have used blitzkriegbaby for reference for years. I just had never had one of these before. Terry
cutiger83 Posted August 27, 2013 Share #15 Posted August 27, 2013 Terry, Tonight, I was looking in my reference book "Women for Victory". The first flight nurse uniform was blue. The garrison cap was blue with maroon piping not black and gold like the officer's. Have you ever seen one of the blue caps with the maroon piping? Does anyone have one they want to post? Thanks, Kat
Terry K. Posted August 27, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted August 27, 2013 Heck Kat, Before I got this hat, I had only seen it in pictures. I have not seen the early ones at all but in pics. Terry
cutiger83 Posted August 27, 2013 Share #17 Posted August 27, 2013 Terry, I figured if this one you have is rare then the earlier one must be even more rare. Maybe someone on here has one. ....Kat
loobylou Posted September 10, 2013 Share #18 Posted September 10, 2013 Hey Emi, don't you have the blue Flight Nurse uniform with maroon piping on the hat? regards lisa
memphis_belle Posted September 20, 2013 Share #19 Posted September 20, 2013 Yes, I do have a dark blue garrison cap with maroon piping but I think that what they're talking about is the type C-1 blue garrison cap worn only by Flight Nurses. Dark blue garrison cap for army nurses and flight nurses. (that's the one I have) C-1 blue garrison cap with maroon piping worn along with their blue flight nurse's uniform.
