WWI Great Grandfather's Friendship Belt Bring Home

I got this belt today. Lady said it was brought home to St. Pete, FL by her Great Grandfather from WWI. I have his name but no research. I think they called these captured German Belts with buttons of many outfits (I think most of these are Australian and English) friendship belts but if some are German buttons I don't get that, so maybe my memory is incorrect. I really like the one for MGC and the TANK. I believe the belt is a Saxony German unit. If William J. Forbes Sr. from St. Petersburg, FL. was a Marine (she did not know and is looking for more stuff) it could fit in my collection. Richard

Not my G Grandfathers but a neighbors. Richard

You are quite correct Richard...there's a nice selection of British / Commonwealth regimental cap badges and shoulder titles on that belt. Such belts are not uncommon here also.

No one by that name shows up in WW1 era muster rolls - nice belt!

They are actually called "Hate Belts"

Brad: Now that you mention it I remember that also, but still doesn't describe this belt unless it was made up by a German soldier and then made a souvenir by my neighbor's G Grandfather. Thanks for the comments. Since his name did not show up in USMC rolls I'll wait a few days to see what else she finds and then sell or trade belt. Richard

People call them "Hate Belts"....but the term is really overused and inaccurate.

It was popular to collect or trade buttons and insignia from Allies and the enemy.....they are just cool souvenirs; "hate" has little to nothing to do with it.

Very interesting relic. I have never owned a WW1 "hate belt" but do have one from WW2. I agree with MAW though that the name doesn't really describe what they were.
