Salvage Sailor Posted September 26, 2013 Share #26 Posted September 26, 2013 Good color photo of a B26 crew....good clean gear setups. Are they all holding bombsights???!!! They look like aerial cameras to me, probably for bomb assessment or photo recon on potential targets. It was quite common for the USAAF in Europe to follow up a raid with a bomber rigged with cameras for target assessment.
Blue Leader Posted September 27, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 27, 2013 Here is a nice picture. All the men are named on the back. Notice the M4A2 helmet. It looks as if the ear flaps have been cut off. There is no end to the field modifications these men did to their equipment. That is one thing that makes collecting these pictures so much fun. Steve Hi Steve, This flak helmet appears to be a M-4 helmet type, the cloth version of the Grow helmet. Mathieu
doinworkinvans Posted November 22, 2013 Author Share #28 Posted November 22, 2013 Here is First Lt. Robert W. McClung - what is he wearing? Is that a life vest? I have a feeling the reason I dont recognize is the fact that maybe its Navy or Marines and not AAF? EIther way its flight gear and would like to know! Plus its cool that is painted or drawn on. That is Robert McClurg not McClung a fighter ace with VMF-214. He is wearing a MK-I life vest which is a Navy life preserver and obviously personalized. He is donning a special accessory on his vest but you are AAF guys so it probably has no interest haha

AAF_Collection Posted December 19, 2013 Share #38 Posted December 19, 2013 MMMM MMMMMM another good flight gear picture from a B24 - Interesting pic, but I'm not sure it's a B-24. The twin gun mount is unusual, and the left gun still retains the fixed individual sight, as well as what appears to be a reflector sight mounted between the guns. Matt. sundance Posted December 24, 2013 Share #43 Posted December 24, 2013 That B-24 tail gunner looks like he's standing behind a picture window. I think I would have preferred a little more cover.

It is from the 384th Bomb Group, 545th Bomb Squadron. The tall gent in the back row in the middle is Dewayne "Ben" Bennett. That is his crew. I was friends with Ben. He helped me find more information about my Uncles service and he also sent me all the info he had about the Schweinfurt mission. He passed away on March 11th 2012. Ben was the lone survivor of the 545th BS to return from the April 13th 1944 Schweinfurt raid. 6 out of 7 B17's of the 545th were shot down that day including my Uncle's B17. It was Ben's third mission!!!! Semper Fi Phil

doinworkinvans Posted January 24, 2014 Author Share #47 Posted January 24, 2014 Here is another cool shot of some Chinese flight cadets. I love this picture for 3 reasons - The AWESOME battle scared B25 in all her glory! The Chinese cadet hats and lastly the fact that the Chinese guys are wearing A2's! Enjoy!
