Question about 1930's navy

Here is a nice cloth helmet from a metalsmith aboard USS Saratoga (CV-3) from 1937-42. My question is why would he wear white? All I hear is that that color relates to safety/medical personnel; something a metalsmith is not commonly associated with.

Salvage Sailor

Most likely because "that's the color they came in" during that pre-war era.

That's a nice one steindaddie. I seem to remember seeing these old cloth helmets in different colors available in the dime bins at surplus stores when I was young and I didn't pay any attention to them. I wish I had.

Here's one of those great Life Magazine color shots from the deck of one of our pre-WW2 carriers. See all the different color cloth helmets and how some of the guys wear them. The one talking seems to have a white one on.

Aviation Metalsmith's currently wear white cranial's when working in a quality assurance capacity. Also, safety department has no specific rate....just a guess...
