Hi,

I picked this set of uniforms up the other day and would like to find out from you guys the best method or websites for researching a uniform. I have the fellows name and home town. It's Joseph Carlton Jones from Hattiesburg, MS but after scouring Google, I haven't been able to find out anything else. I don't know much about Navy uniforms either so If someone could enlighten me on my acquisition it would be wonderful. The place I got the uniform from also had his full Mess Dress uniform which looked like it was for fancy occasions, I didn't get it though. I'm guessing after the fact that I should have gone ahead and picked it up to keep them all together. They just wanted a little more for it than I was willing to pay.

Thanks in advance,

Shannon

Thanks Schottzie, that's the kinda site I talking about. I had no idea he stayed in that long, is there anyway to date or get close to dating the uniforms? Would it be safe to say these are from the 60's?

Yes, that's a safe call. The last ribbon on the bottom ribbon bar is for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, which was established by Executive Order 10977, December 4, 1961 and the designs of the medal and ribbon were approved in April 1962. This ribbon wouldn't have appeared on the Commander's uniform before 1962. Operations during or before 1960's that have been designated for this award are:

• Vietnam 1 Jul 1958 - 3 Jul 1965

• Lebanon 1 Jul 58 - 1 Nov 1958

• Quemoy and Matsu Islands 23 Aug 1958 - 1 Jun 1963

• Taiwan Straits 23 Aug 1958 - 1 Jan 1959

• Congo 14 Jul 1960 - 1 Sep 1962

• Laos 19 Apr 1961 - 7 Oct 1962

• Berlin 14 Aug 1961 - 1 Jun 1963

• Cuba 24 Oct 1962 - 1 Jun 1963

• Congo 23 to 27 Nov 1964

• Dominican Republic 28 Apr 65 - 21 Sep 66

• Korea 1 Oct 66 - 30 Jun 74

Shannon,

One of the best sources of information on US officers are the Register of Officers. These are books printed annually by the government that provides some basic info on every officer in the military. The books are broken down by service and then again broken down by Active/Reserve/National Guard. They are available in most libraries that were government depositories. This would include most state libraries, university libraries and many major public libraries. However they are not ususally kept on the open book shelf with the rest of the collection. You will have to find the government documents section and look there.

Since it appeared that your man was active and not a reservist, I looked in my 1955 copy of the "Register of Commisioned and Warrent officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps". Here is the information that I found:

You can use the file number to request his service record from the NPRC at St. Louis. You are fortunate on two counts: 1) he is Navy and few or none of the Navy records were burnt is the 1973 fire; 2) his records are still available with a Freedom of Information Act request.

If you have any questions on how to request the records or need other information feel free to ask and I am sure someone here will have an answer!
