HolyHappiness Posted August 10, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2013 I know some field nurses wore helmets but I'm curious of how they looked. Did they just have officer insignia, medical insignia (like a medic), or were they bare? The reason I ask is because me and my wife have been cast as extras in the third installment of Saints and Soldiers and she is going to be a Army Corps Nurse. Any help will be appreciated. Austin R Posted August 10, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2013 Most nurses left their helmet blank or painted their rank onto the front. I don't believe I've seen a photo where a nurse had a cross on their helmet.

HolyHappiness Posted August 10, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted August 10, 2013 Thanks for the pictures, that makes for some excellent reference! The only hint about the film that I can give is that it will involve armor late-ETO. I think they have 4 M18's lined up for it! Hopefully it turns out good! memphis_belle Posted August 11, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2013 Nurses wore either bare helmets or painted their rank onto the front. Unlike medics, they painted no red crosses which is a common mistake among reenactors by the way. I think I've seen two or three pictures of nurses having medical insignia painted on their helmets but it shouldn't be taken as a rule. Here are some reference photos: Good Luck with filming! Wish I could be a part of it as well

To me kind of looks like the 82nd A/B div.Great looking pictures. It's possible because those nurses were part of the 50th Field Hospital which was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Take a look at the unit's history here : http://www.med-dept.com/unit_histories/50_fld_hosp.php Notice that the rest of medical personnel also wears 82nd A/B div. patches. HolyHappiness Posted August 11, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted August 11, 2013 Awesome! I'm trying to get my wife's equip as accurate as possible. Last question: Would nurses, if rank was painted on, have the leadership bar painted on the back or is that only for combat units? Thanks!

29navy Posted August 21, 2013 Share #11 Posted August 21, 2013 It's only for combat units. For nurses only rank in front or simply bare helmet. In general I would agree, but some nurses at some Field and Evac hospitals did have the officer stripe. But it seems to be a bit hit or miss as to which hosptials (including the men) did it or not. loobylou Posted September 10, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 10, 2013 Plain helmet would be the best option with perhaps rank bar painted on the front, although this seems to be seen more in the ETO photos than MTO, they were seen in plain far more than the helmets with red crosses painted on etc. I have a few more ref photos I will try and post up later. kind regards lisa
