Civil War model 1864 cartridge box with old repairs.

This box has 4 wire repairs to hold it together. Strap on the flap has been attached with a split pin and I'm not sure if a box plate was added at some point (2 holes in embossed "US"). I didn't make the repairs and I don't know how long they've been there. It's "R. Nece Philadelphia AD" maker marked and "E. A. Sniffen sub inspector" marked. There were no tins in this box. I'll be including more photos. Thanks for looking and any comments are welcome.

I wonder what was attached to the front flap at one time. Those holes are definitely not the box plate slits you see on most cartridge boxes.

I've not seen anything to compare it to. They look like small screw holes. I've thought about the possibilities but unless we see another explained example we'll probably never know.
