The announcement of a request to name the next Navy combat ship the USS Indianapolis received a standing ovation from those who survived the sinking of the ship of the same name in 1945.

Rear Admiral Rick Williamson, Commander Navy Region Midwest, made the announcement at the 68th reunion of survivors of the USS Indianapolis.

Williams spoke on behalf of the Secretary of the Navy, reading a letter dated July 29 that says they are making a request for the next Littoral Combat Ship to be named the USS Indianapolis - pending approval and appropriations from Congress.

Of the 317 brave men who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945, there are 38 living today.

This year's reunion is especially significant since it is expected to be the last formal reunion for the USS Indianapolis.

The reunion will continue on Sunday with a memorial service at 9 a.m. honoring the entire crew of the USS Indianapolis - those surviving, those who died after 1945 and those 880 men who were lost at sea.

If the survivors applauded the gesture, that good enough for me.

They seemed pretty pleased with one vet stating he'd like to serve aboard her.

I think that is an excellent idea.To bad they didn't do this years ago.So if they go by how ships are named now the next USS Indianapolis will be a LSD, Dock Landing Ship.It could be a SSN, Nuclear Attack Sub, but I'm not sure if their making them anymore.

This was a comment left by someone on the article. The legendary heavy cruiser was followed in 1977 by USS Indianapolis SSN-697, a Los Angeles class attack submarine. She was decommissioned in 1998.
