mike wayne Posted November 5, 2014 Share #26 Posted November 5, 2014 thanks sgt. pete glad to stand corrected. I really thought I was right about that but I could not have told you why I thought it. must have been all the john wayne movies. no relation of course since his was a stage name. it's always a great day when I learn something like this. mike That is a common misconception due to media coverage. The US Army had about 22 Divisions in the Pacific, while the entire Marine Corps consisted of only 6 Divisions. So the overwhelming number of troops were Army troops. sgtpete Posted November 6, 2014 Share #28 Posted November 6, 2014 Are Army divisions the same size as Marine divisions though? Marine Divisions were slightly bigger than Army Divisions, around 17,000 men to the Army's 15,000. And that's just the Infantry Divisions. The US Army maintained 7 different Air Forces also.
