Help date Camillus USN, Mark 2 knife

I wonder if someone here could help date this knife...

It's a standard Mark2 with these markings:

- on the left "ear" of the ricasso is stamped: USN over MARK 2

- there's nothing on the other ricasso "ear", but on the ricasso, (lengthwise, just below where the blade fits) is stamped: CAMILLUS, NY

Did Camillus ever stamp the other side right side "ear" of the ricasso (or did just Ka-Bar do this) ?

I read somewhere that Camillus stopped using the NY but I'm not sure of the time period.

Thanks!

Quick guess. Late WW2 say 1944-ish. Camillus went to guard marking their MK2's around that time. Some of the other folks might be able to give a more accurate time frame. SKIP

Skip is correct - that mark was used from mid-late 1944 to the end of production 1945. Sheath is correct for that knife / time period.

The comment about dropping the NY applies to the later Knife, Combat (same design but blade marked) and that changed in the 1970s.

Thanks.... I appreciate the answers!!

These US Navy MK2 scabbards all seem to look alike but they show different NORD numbers on the back.

I've got one that's stamped NORD-8676. The scabbard for the one photo'd above is NORD-6581.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the numbers...? The scabbards look alike... nothings looks "revised" to me, althought one is lighter gray in color. I realize knives can be separated from their scabbards over time, but I thought it might be a "date" type number.

NORD stands for Navy Order and the number of the order.

The following chart is for both Mark 1 and Mark 2 sheathes, in some cases both types were included in the order.

There is some information that indicates that NORD 6804 was for Mark 1 sheaths only and NORD 6581 was for Mark 2 sheaths only.

NORD Dollar Value Date of Order Approximate Number

4723 $521,000.00 November 1943 592000

6581 $240,000.00 June 1944 280000

6804 $79,000.00 July 1944 90000

8114 $592,000.00 March 1945 672000

8676 $125,000.00 May 1945 142000

WOW!! They made a bunch of scabbards. Serious money too. Scabbards look to cost about 90-95 cents each. More than I figured. SKIP

Sounds like you have a guard marked WW2 Camillus. The ricasso is the part of the blade just in front of the guard before you get to the end of the edge. From your picture that side of the knife usually has the "CAMILLUS NY" showing on that side of the blade stamped examples.

Nice looking knife by the way.

Here's an example of a guard marked Camillus;

Hope I didn't misunderstand your post. If so my apologies.

As troop,

My apologies.. I should have said guard not ricasso (I need to learn my knife terminology better.. I'm working on it!) Mine looks just like your pic with identical markings on the guard.

Hello Gary, I am going respectively disagree NORD would be more appropriate N-ORD. N=Navy ORD= Ordnance or Bureau of Ordnance more specifically.

This is the standard contract prefix for the Bureau of Ordnance and is used in the same function as all other naval contract prefixes such as NOBS which is Bureau of Ships or NOY Bureau of Yards & Docks etc.

You will see two types of NORD prefixes NoRD and NORD, this change occurred approx. 1941 in conjunction with an internal reorganization of the ordnance administration. I found an excellent reference written by the bureau that discusses this contract prefix system.

Thank you for the correction. The Navy and knives are not my strong suit, and I always am ready to stand corrected. Appreciate your taking the time to correct this.
