Sabrejet Posted July 24, 2013 Share #3 Posted July 24, 2013 Yes it is Nick...it's actually what's known as a "War Eagle" because it's facing the arrowheads. Such Colonel's insignia is reputedly only worn in time of war.

quack Posted July 25, 2013 Share #6 Posted July 25, 2013 Wonder if we are ever going to see a "peace eagle". Yes, We've been wearing one for years--- That's the one where the Eagle faces away from the Arrowheads. I don't know when the design officially changed, but I think it was in the 1950s. I wonder if it was a follow-on to the change in the Name of the Department of War to the Department of Defence in 1949. On the other hand, some of us like to wear old insignia, so I wore a "War Eagle" for many years in the 1985-2000 period, and nobody ever called me on it. Some of the Generals I met stated they much preferred the old ("War Eagle") style.
Sabrejet Posted July 25, 2013 Share #7 Posted July 25, 2013 If you were to get a carded pair Nick, you'd see that they're "handed" so that the eagle always looks forward when worn on the right / left shoulders. I have some "war eagles" similar to yours but all of my more modern ones are as described above, with the eagle looking away from the arrowheads.
