Mustang Posted July 13, 2013 Share #28 Posted July 13, 2013 Amazing photos!!I have always wondered about the helmets on the USS North Carolina.I often thought that they were just added for display but to know they were the ones used on board makes seeing them more significant. When I was a teen,a friend and I decided it would be cool to go into some of the areas that were not open to visitors. We made it up one flight of stairs and turned a corner and were caught by some of the ship employees who were eating lunch in the room we wound up in.We had to beg them not to escort us off the ship. The older guy kinda winked at us while the two younger guys were making their threats of disembarking us. SergeantMajorGray Posted July 14, 2013 Author Share #30 Posted July 14, 2013 What will happen to all of these great helmets anyway? They will continue to sit in the climate controlled storeroom I'll sure some will be put in displays but this is where the real nice ones are. Chief Bast Posted July 14, 2013 Share #31 Posted July 14, 2013 Amazing photos and equally amazing job you have volunteered for! Best of luck on cataloging the inventory - I can only imagine what surprises may be in store for you. The family and I toured the USS Alabama a few weeks back and they too had loads of helmets, kapok life vests and various other equipment on display throughout the ship. I would love to know how much of their collection is vintage to WWII or the ship, specifically.

Theorywolf Posted July 22, 2013 Share #33 Posted July 22, 2013 Hey, I'm within two hours of Wilmington. So, if you like, I can come down and help! I have two helmets from the USS Thorn of WW II. However, most went down with the ship in the 70s when it was sunk for taget practice! Cheers, Mike

Cheers, Mike I don't they'll let me bring my forum buddies for a helmet tour yet It's a shame that they leave all this cool stuff on ships before they scrap/sink them. Joe Posted July 28, 2013 Share #35 Posted July 28, 2013 I visted the North Carolina about a month ago. Always go once a year on the way to the beach. I really enjoyed seeing the helmets displayed in the ship's different areas.

SergeantMajorGray Posted August 6, 2013 Author Share #45 Posted August 6, 2013 liner to the above helmet used with the sweatband backwards. All the hawley liners in shells had not been removed since they were last used so I didn't attempt to take them out.
