Kaneoheboy Posted July 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 8, 2013 Anyone have information as to what the upper Waiawa Military Reservation was used for by the Army in WWII? The site is now the "Waiawa Correctional Facility" run by state corrections. Also, any idea what the storage bunkers were used for that are located near the Waiawa Stream? Any help, photos, etc. will be appreciated. Kaneoheboy
espeed Posted July 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2013 Not sure if this picture is of the Waiawa facility, but my dad told me of Waiawa and of Schofield Barracks when his division was transported over to Hawaii following their successful invasion of Attu and Kiska in the Alaskan Aluetian chain. This was taken in late '43.He was attached to to the 7th Division, 17th Infantry. They used alot of the facilities at Waiawa for storage of their equipment and they practiced amphibious landings on I believe either Kuai or Maui due to it's familiarity and shape to the island of Kwajalein, which his division landed on in early '44. He told me they used to take the train from Waiawa to downtown Honolulu for 2 day passes. After the landings on Kwajalein and Eniwetok, the 7th Division came back to Hawaii, and on 27 July 1944, President Roosevelt reviewed the troops and the facilities at Schofield and Waiawa. My dad is second from the left in the enclosed pix. Hope this helps.
