87th Inf. Div Helmet liner sold today.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I put my best foot forward to win this great named helmet liner today, but it wasn't good enough! Anyway, while researching the name inside the helmet liner while the auction was still active, I did ID the vet and also found his Uniform and silver star medal grouping for sale by a military dealer. I thought it would be great to put the two back together again, but I didn't win the liner, so I didn't buy the uniform / medal grouping.

I don't think the two sellers know about one another??

Anyway, I was hoping someone here or on APF won the liner and if so, PM me and I'll link you up with his uniform grouping if you're interested. I would hope someone would do the same for me if the shoe was on the other foot.

Thanks
Troy

Here is the description for the seller with uniform grouping.

SILVER STAR UNIFORM GROUPING 87th DIVISION TO STERLING R. BARLOW: This EXCELLENT uniform grouping is named inside the WWII period tailors tag, and the small post-war name tag. It is from Sterling R. Barlow and I have additional copied of the medal awarded from the History of that unit included. His unnamed silver star in box is included with his uniform he wore until 1949 in the Ohio NG. His rank finishing is Lt. Colonel, but was a 2nd Lt. when awarded with most of the medals in the Battle of the bulge in the 87th Div. 345th Inf.

Hi Troy,

I've won the auction... and I didn't know that you were on it too. But you know how I love this division ;)

I've found some good informations about this 2nd lieutenant. I'll try to have the grouping too.

Best regards,

Mat

Mat,

I'm glad you won this and I should have known you were in on this one also!! :D

Anyway, I just sent you the link to the uniform seller, so I hope you can get the grouping back together again.

Good luck and great ID'd Liner, my friend. Hope to see more about it when you get it all in hand.

87th Infantry Legacy Association is still taking donations for a monument. http://87thinfantrydivision.com/Home.shtml

There's some good personal accounts linked to their site.

Well I was runner up on the bidding. My plans were to reunite the group as well. I hope that you are able to put it all together Mat. Congrats on the score.

The 87th also has the 345the battle history on there as well. Lt. Barlows name surfaces under decorations toward the back. Also, here is a nice obit with a photo as well:

I look forward to seeing it all put together. Take care. jason

Well it seems we were all detectives on this one!! Again, glad it was a battle won by a fellow forum member! B)

It sure is nice when there is enough of an ID on a piece of military gear to positively ID its history. Could you imagine if all it said inside was LT. SRB? You could still probably make the connections after tons of research, but could never be 100%.

Again,,, GREAT LINER AND SOLDIER!!

Great Find! But I have to add to your information. Barlow was from the Cleveland Ohio area and a number of years ago went to his estate sale where I picked up a number of items that belonged to him. Items such as his trunk, M-43 field jacket, rain coat, Ike jacket, shirts and trousers, boots, in all about twenty-five items.

Hi Mat

Yes, I still have all those items, it's a nice grouping from one guy. As I mentioned the trunk contains a ike jacket with his two patches (the 83rd and 87th), trousers and shirts (OD and khaki), sweater, "radar" cap, rain coat, field jacket, buckle boots and cavalry style high boots, socks of various height and winter underwear, maps, khaki and "sateen" uniforms from the fifties (his reserve days), and small miscellaneous items. Plus, a very early helmet liner (named) with 87th and "fulge" insignia (same as on the unit pins on the uniform), the liner edge is painted with a red and blue edge. Hopefully today I can take photos and send them to you.

Wow,,, And to top it off, that liner is rare in its own right. That is an early Type 1 Saint Clair Liner with the green paint inside! Excellent grouping and thanks for posting.

Here is a similar helmet shell currently on the market, but the seller has no ideas about the markings.
