Just got this USN jumper, my first WWII USN item, and have a few questions. First, what is the red hash mark for on the left sleeve? Second, I noticed that there is a place where there was once a diamond shaped patch in the middle of this hash mark (about 1" X 1") that the patch has been removed. Anyone help me out on what this was, or might have been? Lastly, is the crossed axes on the grade patch mean that this was a firefighter? Thanks for your answers, I will take them off the air!

BRIAN: The hashmark represented four-years enlistment, two would mean eight years, three would be twelve, etc. The crossed axes are for a Carpenter or a Painter. Diamond shape patch was an open white diamond with black centre with white letters CB for SeaBees/Construction Battalion). Hope this helps! He wears a Navy Good Conduct Medal (ribbon), WW2 Victory Medal, European/Middle-East/North Africa Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, and American Defense Medal (ribbons). He was a Petty Officer 1st Class. The badge on the lower right sleeve was for Expert Rifle or Pistol shot. thumbsup.gif Sarge Booker (hhbooker2@yahoo.com)

Thanks for the quick reply. Are these CB diamonds hard to come by? I do not think that I will add one since this is exactly how I bought this uniform, but do not know a lot about the USN stuff at all. Again, thanks for your quick response. thumbsup.gif

The blocked letter "CB" patch that was removed was replaced by the SeaBee patch you now see at the top of his sleeve.
