pchepurko Posted June 7, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2013 I need to find a pair of gold 2nd Lt. epaulet bars of WWII vintage. I am not sure what they should look like or the measurements. Would some please post an example and give measurments. The reason I need them is to replace the gold bars in my uncle's display case. His original bars are going to be used at my niece's commissioning next year. If anyone has a pair of 2nd Lt. WWII bars, in good condition, for sale please let me know. Thanks in advance. TLeo Posted June 7, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 7, 2013 Are you looking for Marine Corps bars? Marine 2nd Lt bars for the shoulder epaulettes were 1 and 1/8 inch long, 3/8" wide and smooth, not beveled on edges. They can be pin back or clutch back. pchepurko Posted June 8, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted June 8, 2013 Do Marine Corps bars differ from US Army bar?
TLeo Posted June 8, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2013 Yes, as I understand it, the Army's bars were beveled on the edges and (I think) a bit smaller but not sure about the size. here is a link to a Marine shoulder bar on ebay. It's pretty well worn but you can see it has no bevel on the edges and smooth with a slight curve for the shoulders. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-WWII-SCREW-BACK-USMC-1ST-LT-BAR-FULL-SIZE-STERLING-HM-/310648984228?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item48541f52a4

jmar Posted June 9, 2013 Share #6 Posted June 9, 2013 There were quite a few manufacturers and variations made during that time period too. If you can post a photo of the front and back of one of your uncle's bars it could help narrow down an exact replacement for you. Best wishes, Joe
craig_pickrall Posted June 10, 2013 Share #7 Posted June 10, 2013 This should give you an idea of sizes and differences in detail.
