1936farmall Posted March 30, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2008 I found this First Sergent Chevron. Looks to be Infantry. Not sure how old or how much its worth. I had others in my collection but haven't found them yet. Anyone want to take a stab at it? 1880s is my guess. Here's a picture. Can take a back side scan if needed:
GIl Sanow Posted March 30, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2008 This is for the overcoat. If it was for the 5-button coat it would be white with black chainstitching. If for the dress uniform, the chevrons would be trimmed in gold bullion lace. Not sure what the story is in the lt. blue 1SG diamond. Looks like an add-on. 1936farmall Posted March 30, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2008 Thankyou. How old do you think it is? I can scan the back if you need to have a look?
Lee Ragan Posted March 31, 2008 Share #4 Posted March 31, 2008 I believe these came out in the late 1880's or maybe early 1890's. A check of Emersons book "Cheverons", would pin it down, but I'm at work and away from my references. The blue diamond added on is a neat variation! GIl Sanow Posted April 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted April 1, 2008 Certainly the basic chevron of this style would have been worn until the skyblue overcoat was obsoleted -- probably about 1900 or shortly thereafter. That's why the Infantry overcoat chevron was this color -- to contrast with the lighter blue of the overcoat. They were worn on the cuff, below the elbow length cape. I would date these as 1880's - ca. 1900. G
