PSO Posted May 31, 2013 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2013 USN regs call for a plain badge with raised veins. Army versions are not plain. This is collar size about 3/4 inches by Vanguard WW2 era. It is not plain, but does have raised veins.
firefighter Posted May 31, 2013 Share #2 Posted May 31, 2013 Look's to be Navy, Coast Guard, or Marine Corps Lt Commander/Major.
MattS Posted May 31, 2013 Share #3 Posted May 31, 2013 I'm not an insignia expert, but I don't believe the army has 1/2 size rank insignia, so whenever I find 1/2 size rank I figure it is USN/USMC/USCG. Full-size USN officer rank insignia is only worn on one or two overcoats (rain coat and maybe the windbreaker I think?), and shoulder boards or sleeve lace is used on most uniforms so it is not found as often. So in my opinion this is a navy LtCdr/USMC Major's pin. Dave Posted May 31, 2013 Share #4 Posted May 31, 2013 Yes, it's a "naval service" one. It does have really nice detail...

Prior thread: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=121128&hl=Major I seem to recall that, at some point (50's,60's?) the USAF utilized small size officer collar rank insignia for the summer khaki shirt. However, USAF major leaves would have resembled the "Army" style leaves without the telltale "veins" of USN/USMC leaves. Agree the posted pin is clearly USN/USMC. Dave Posted May 31, 2013 Share #7 Posted May 31, 2013 Thanks guys...I am buying it. Do it! If I were still on active duty, I would (of course, up until the time I got out, I was wearing a pair of oakleaves that had previously belonged to a MOH recipient, but still...) PSO Posted June 1, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted June 1, 2013 Yes Sir Commander. Vanguard seems to have some of the most interesting designs.
