pjm Posted May 16, 2013 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2013 I recently acquired a nice grouping once belonging to Lt. J. M. Schaupp, Jr., a USAAS pilot. He trained at Call Field, Wichita Falls, Tx and went to France in 1918. Here are a few bits of paper work and photos. The photos can be attributed to Corporal Lewis Lupton Kaylor, an aerial photographer.

pjm Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted May 17, 2013 Here's another image showing Lt. Schaupp Jr. wearing his bullion wings along with the wings themselves. Reverse is marked with a stamp of a Wichita Falls, TX photo shop located near Call Field. The uniform jacket is also included in the grouping and has a Wichita Falls tailor tag. pjm Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted May 17, 2013 Corporal Lewis Lupton Kaylor, a USAAS aerial photographer took most of the flight related images in this grouping. There are various sites on line with his aircraft photos as well as others of pilots, etc. Apparently, he made copies for individuals who were at Call Field at the same time. Schauff's flight book includes entries that mention aerial photography instruction so presumably the cockpit shots of him were taken at that time. I'll scan the page and post shortly. There are other Kaylor images of pilots in the same cockpit setting, looking back at the photographer as in the Schauff picures. Meanwhile, here's a wonderful site with Kaylor's diary that includes some photos of him with his aerial camera, etc. In it he mentions taking pictures of all the officers so perhaps he also did the one of Schauff in his flight gear holding a cigarette. http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~cline/LLK_Diary/LLK_Diary_The_War_with_Germanyvold.pdf
pjm Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted May 17, 2013 Also included in the group is this rare list of pilots. Interestingly, it is arranged by state. This actually makes research a little easier if one is trying to attribute material to a particular pilot based on the location where it is found. Although it certainly is not always the case, often groupings are found in the state where the pilot was from. The document consists of thousands of officers listed in over 170 single spaced pages of typed entries with names, ranks, etc.

JDK Posted May 27, 2013 Share #14 Posted May 27, 2013 Beautiful items! Thanks for sharing. You should post the whole lot in the groupings section. It's a great grouping! JD
