patches Posted July 9, 2016 Share #126 Posted July 9, 2016 Yeah, I did the "Home Town Recruiter" thing for 2 months back in the pre-beret days. The 4 assigned and myself were all assigned to Airborne units at one time or another and we all wore our "Abn" overseas caps, again with no DUI. And it was a "promotional thing". Repeated that duty 2 years later (now beret in place) and was instructed by the Station NCOIC to wear beret to work while the other former Para's wore the patched cap, Again strictly "show" Right, hey I remember his name, it was Dozier. I can't stand not having the Viet Vet Data Base up anymore, could of searched a bit more on him. No real 503rd Rosters online, just some scattered 4th of the 503rd ones. patches Posted July 11, 2016 Share #127 Posted July 11, 2016 One more image of 3rd Bde wearing the symbol at a certain point in 1969 as a helmet marking, albeit without the pennant.
seanmc1114 Posted July 28, 2016 Author Share #128 Posted July 28, 2016 Soldier of the 2nd Battalion 16th Infantry wearing full color pocket patch April 1969. The full color 1st Infantry Division SSI was not at all unusual even at this late stage in the war as the 1st never officially adopted a subdued patch during the war. seanmc1114 Posted August 6, 2016 Author Share #129 Posted August 6, 2016 Staff Sergeant Luther Augustus Smith wearing the pocket patch of the 2nd Battalion 28th Infantry. He was killed in action on October 17, 1967. Interestingly, according to his obituary, he was jump qualified and served as an instructor at the Airborne School at Fort Benning for five years, but in the picture he is not wearing jump wings. patches Posted October 7, 2016 Share #134 Posted October 7, 2016 Officers ( to include four 2nd Lieutenants, a Warrant Officer) from the 11th Radio Research Unit in 1965, I wonder if they would in time put this patch on as well as the Big Red One patch, believe this unit was under division HQ right? http://11thrru.org/det2.shtml
seanmc1114 Posted October 7, 2016 Author Share #135 Posted October 7, 2016 27735_11th RRU - Names Class of.jpg Officers ( to include four 2nd Lieutenants, a Warrant Officer) from the 11th Radio Research Unit in 1965, I wonder if they would in time put this patch on as well as the Big Red One patch, believe this unit was under division HQ right? slo5.jpg http://11thrru.org/det2.shtml It's interesting that 7 out of 10 of them are jump qualified while assigned to a non-airborne unit. I guess at that stage of the war, the Army wasn't yet experiencing a shortage of paratroopers for airborne units.

I guess at that stage of the war, the Army wasn't yet experiencing a shortage of paratroopers for airborne units. These are officers, so officers in most branches as a matter of course attended jump school, the majority of them at any rate, it was a shortage of jump qualified EMs that was always the problem, particularly 11 Series Infantry EMs.

Buckner M. Creel, III assumed command of the 1st Infantry Division Support Command on 10 September 1967. He served as a company commander with the 77th Infantry Division on Okinawa in WWII where he earned a Silver Star and was wounded in Korea on 8 September 1950. patches Posted May 9, 2017 Share #144 Posted May 9, 2017 Another 701st Maintenance Battalion, and original shirt, no name tape, but from the remaining threads and junk was clearly a White tape, so an early 60s pre Vietnam worn one or a Vietnam worn one circa 65-66. Cobra 6 Actual Posted April 13, 2018 Share #150 Posted April 13, 2018 Nice JJ there, Matmil! Here is a 2nd Infantry set of patches: Vietnamese handsewn on the left and US cut edge machine sewn on the right. These were used by a 1st/2nd soldier: The cactus on the Vietnamese patch has been reconfigured as a green hand giving The Finger for some subtle grunt humor.
