P-E Posted May 15, 2013 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2013 Hello all, I was doing some researches when I found this pictures... ZAMBOANGA CITY, Republic of the Philippines (Jul. 2, 2010) – Col. William Coultrup (right), Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines (JSOTF-P) presents a plaque of appreciation to the Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines, Harry K. Thomas, Jr. for being the guest speaker at the JSOTF-P change-of-command ceremony July 2. Coultrup relinquished command to U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Gusentine during the ceremony held at Camp Navarro, Western Mindanao Command Headquarters. Coultrup’s next assignment is in Washington D.C., and Gusentine joins JSOTF-P after completing a tour as the Director for Operations at Special Operations Command Pacific in Hawaii. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (AW) Joshua Scott) source : http://www.flickr.com/photos/us-pacific-command/4774341535/in/photostream/ The Colonel William Coultrup has a realy curious patch I never saw....Is that possible to help me for identification ? Is that one of the new SSI ? This patch looks very similar to the Special Operations Command Pacific...or to the seal of the United States Pacific Command...But it's none of them... Thanks in advance for your help, P-E
P-E Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #2 Posted May 15, 2013 Finally found some additionnal pictures that show soldiers wearing similar patch as "former wartime" patch...so my conclusion to this is that this is a new SSI...? Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commanding general of U.S. Army Pacific, greets Spc. Jennie Scipio, a supply clerk at Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines. Mixon was in the Philippines on a three-day command trip, visiting with nearly 20 Soldiers from USARPAC, U.S. Embassy officials and armed forces of the Philippines counterparts. P-E Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted May 15, 2013 I think that so ...but I'm realy surprised as they are apparently not so news...if you takes a look to the year of pictures, they are more around 2009-2010...I did some additional researches online, but found absolutely no information about a new shoulder sleeve insignia for the JSOTF-Philippines....realy curious... Joe McKinney Posted May 15, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 15, 2013 The emblem in the center of the patch is that of the U.S. Pacific Command. Could this be a patch for the U.S. Army Element of the U.S. Pacific Command?
P-E Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted May 15, 2013 Yes, I also see it as a mix of Special Operations Command Pacific and United States Pacific Command. But based on the legend of pictures, all the wearers of this insignia are attached to the JSOTF-Philippines...However, nothing certain, this is my theory, but I've no informations, just those pictures and their legends... Teamski Posted May 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted May 16, 2013 Yeah, looking over their site, I do believe that the patch is for JSOTF-P. -Ski
468abnarm Posted May 16, 2013 Share #8 Posted May 16, 2013 According to Geoff Barker's book the patch is a provisonally authorized patch for SOCPAC. Done by the SOCPAC Commander back in 2009, it is not clear if the patch is still being worn today.
P-E Posted May 16, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted May 16, 2013 What's the title of this book ? Ok, got it...finaly found a clear picture of the patch : If someone has a source to get an ACU one, I'll definitely be interested in them !

Longhorn92 Posted May 16, 2013 Share #11 Posted May 16, 2013 It isn't USA Element of PACOM. I think 468abnarm may be correct in that it could be a trial run/new version of the existing SOCPAC patch. The above pics were taken well after TIOH approved the current patch, which, according to their website, was in May of '97. So maybe it was/is a trial for a new version? Or is the new version? Ok, got it...finaly found a clear picture of the patch : If someone has a source to get an ACU one, I'll definitely be interested in them ! The "book" is a CD called "A Choronology of U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Forces." Geoff shows the tab as a blue background with yellow lettering. Since the patch was only provisonially authorized it would not surprise me to find that it comes with both black & yellow and blue & yellow tabs. P-E Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted May 17, 2013 Ok, thanks for the information. So this patch is for the SOCPAC, interesting ! By chance, does the seller give additional informations about the patch ? I also search informations about the following one...this one looks to be JSOTF-Philippines : A Joint Special Operations Task Force - Philippines service member pays homage to fallen comrades at a Memorial Day Ceremony held at Armed Forces of the Philippines, Camp Navarro. More than 100 soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen attended the event. Since 2002, more than 560 Armed Forces of the Philippines service members and 17 JSOTF-P members have given their lives in the fight against terrorism in the Philippines.Read more: http://www.dvidshub.net/image/409766/memorial-day-ceremony#.UZXVvaKeNc8#ixzz2TWyuOmhm Detail of the insignia : It looks to be an unofficial patch but there're soo many new patches that I don't know if it's a new authorized version or something else... Steverino Posted May 17, 2013 Share #15 Posted May 17, 2013 I cannot offer any plausible explanation for the scarcity and questionable identification for the patch seen in the several photos. What I can say is that the color patch seen in the post by P-E is NOT an officially issued patch. That patch was not made in the U.S. as is required by law for Army SSI's. The one in the photo was no doubt made from an official TIOH rendering, but was most likely in China, Taiwan or Mexico. That dark blue background is not embroidered as is required by law. It is the cheaper and easier method employed by inexpensive manufacturers in foreign countries to simulate a 100% embroidered background. Only SI's are covered by the law. Pocket patches and patches for aviation units, ships, etc. can legally be made by anyone - anywhere. Patch Johnson

There is a metal pocket badge worn by some members of the command.
Teamski Posted May 17, 2013 Share #17 Posted May 17, 2013 Great ID! My question is this: Will we ever see a legitimate color version of this patch now that colored patches are no longer worn on the service coat? The only reprieve is mandating the use of garrison patches on the ACU/Multicam uniforms. I have a feeling that we will be seeing color fakes of these patches popping up on E-Bay. Mark my words. -Ski
