mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 #1 Posted May 7, 2013 These items were part of a large grouping donated by a nearly defunct American legion Post, which you can read about here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/175885-american-legion-donations-part-i/&do=findComment&comment=1344172 There was a nice Model 1917 stick grenade in the mix...still has the pull string and ceramic ball too...all these are inert, by the way.... mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 Author #2 Posted May 7, 2013 Forgot to mention the markings on the handle of the potato masher are nice and clear too...these two shells are about 8 inches tall.....and the base markings....the 1916 dated bottom is the shell on the left side......
mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 Author #3 Posted May 7, 2013 Next is a 7.7cm shell for the Model 1896 (New Model) artillery piece.....and a close-up of the fuse markings...the fuses on both the larger shells still spin freely too...
mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 Author #4 Posted May 7, 2013 I thought maybe someone had chromed this shell...but the fuse (which is about 8 inches long) is also chromed....I found the attached chart, and the lower right shell seems to be the same thing, so maybe this is a poison gas shell????? Mark sends
ww2relichunter Posted May 7, 2013 #5 Posted May 7, 2013 Very interesting shells you have their i love the potato masher grenade and the poison gas shell !!
mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 Author #6 Posted May 7, 2013 While I was looking at the American Mark I grenade, he casually says "I've got a potato masher laying around here somewhere...do you want it?"....I couldn't say "YES" fast enough...there's a couple dozen boxes that haven't been opened in more than a decade, so who knows what's still in there.... Too Much WW1 Militaria Posted May 7, 2013 #7 Posted May 7, 2013 You never, ever, never see the potato masher's in original shape!
mvmhm Posted May 7, 2013 Author #8 Posted May 7, 2013 Oh, I know...I was happy to turn it over and see the belt clip was still there too....I've had some really nice WWII ones (including a mint one that turn out to be live)...but the only nice ones of these I've seen have been at the USMC museum and the Imperial War Museum...look at the other grouping too, the American grenade is just as nice...
