kyhistorian01 Posted April 28, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2013 I found these two items together at a flea market. I was wondering where I might go to research the Navy man these belonged to. Also I have never seen a USN marked whistle. Usually I see the US marked ones. Leroy Robert Mendell 855 89 67 T1/44 USNR C
RustyCanteen Posted April 28, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 28, 2013 The whistles were used with life jackets, and a few other things. Is it dated?

I don't have access to Ancestry because I can't afford it. The date on the whistle is 1944
RustyCanteen Posted April 29, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 29, 2013 Ok, it looks like he was aboard the USS Hancock from 1944-1945.
BROBS Posted May 9, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 9, 2013 The whistles were used with life jackets, and a few other things. Is it dated? I just picked this one up as well.. and I'm curious what else they were used for? appears to be the same as the one originally posted, only with the lanyard. interesting that these have a cork ball inside the whistle. RustyCanteen Posted May 10, 2013 Share #8 Posted May 10, 2013 Ok... just thought maybe some were used to order people around perhaps for Seabees using machinery etc... Since it's a whistle I'm sure there were some used outside of the usual reasons. In war, anything's possible.
bellasilva Posted May 26, 2013 Share #9 Posted May 26, 2013 Just found this topic otherwise I would've done the research earlier. Leroy Mendell served on the USS Hancock CV-19 (aircraft carrier), which saw TONS of action in the PTO in WWII. I'm not sure exactly what Mendell did but the muster rolls show him as having been received on board the Hancock for the first time on 15 April 1944 and served with her throughout the war.
