digi-shots Posted April 25, 2013 #1 Posted April 25, 2013 These Chinese bullion wings came on a CBI uniform. I've posted in the uniform section, but would like to learn a bit more about just these wings. I thought maybe some of the "wing collectors" might be able to help. Here are photos, front and back, on and off the uniform. The uniform belonged to a CBI pilot that flew the hump in a C-46 with a Combat Group in the CBI Theatre during 1944-45. I've tried to research Chinese Bullion Wings but haven't been very successful. Thanks!
Jack's Son Posted April 25, 2013 #2 Posted April 25, 2013 As much as I like CBI wings, I know nothing about cloth or bullion designs, I too look forward to learning along with you. They look very nice if they are period wings!!

CliffP Posted April 26, 2013 #4 Posted April 26, 2013 Nothing to worry about with that wing badge. You really do have a very fine embroidered example that was produced in China sometime between 1944-46. If you would like to see a few more interesting Chinese pilot wings do by all means go to the excellent website operated by Bob Schwartz "bschwartz" at: (1) http://www.ww2wings.com/wings/china/chinapilot.shtml (2) http://www.ww2wings.com/wings/china/chinaavg.shtml Cliff P.
digi-shots Posted April 26, 2013 Author #5 Posted April 26, 2013 Thanks, Cliff for the good word and also for the link to the Chinese Wings. I've never seen any others in person. There are some good looking wings on those sites! Thanks also to bschwartz, what an excellent source of information! Here's another view of the front... the wings have a bluish cast to them. I'm guessing they used 2 different types and color of bullion thread.
hink441 Posted April 26, 2013 #6 Posted April 26, 2013 Great looking wing Linda !!! Thanks for sharing it with us. Chris
MAA Posted April 29, 2013 #7 Posted April 29, 2013 Thats a great wing ~ very scarce. I have a couple uniforms with groupings in my personal collection that have both an American AAF Pilot wing and Chinese Pilot wing on the tunic. Typically you see a "dual winged" uniform with an AAF wing and either an RCAF or RAF wing, but very, very rarly a Chinese Pilot wing. Again, you have a great looking period original example there!
McT_Aviation Posted April 5 #8 Posted April 5 Which Combat Group was he with? I have a pair from 10th Combat Cargo to include his autobiography. He earned his post-war (1945-46) while training Chinese Pilots in twin-engine aircraft.
