patches Posted April 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2013 I was going to post this fabulous photo I found, in the Photos Found By Accident topic in the Photographs Forum, but I thought it merited posting here, a 1957 photo of the actress Olivia De Haviland at her home in Paris France wearing a Fatique Shirt presented to her by Troops of the 11th Airborne Division over in West Germany as an honorary member of the Angels, here we see both the 11th Abn Div and the 503rd AIR Rock patch. While the wearing on the right side of the Rock Patch has nothing to do with it being a Combat Patch, it is more of a unit presentation sort of a thing, as the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, soon to be the 1st Battle Group 503rd Infantry (Abn) was part of the 11th Abn Div at that time. While she was living abroad, in Paris, she was at that time in the 1950s still very much active in the USO, entertaining U.S. Personel all over Europe., she had then when this photo was taken, a two year contract with the U.S. Army Special Services. Terry K. Posted April 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2013 That's a nice pic of a great lady! I think any of the entertainment people that did stuff for the USO are great
patches Posted April 18, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted April 18, 2013 That's a nice pic of a great lady! I think any of the entertainment people that did stuff for the USO are great During WWII She had the reputation of being one of the most faitful and favorite celebrities out there in the Pacific, once when she rode out, to the Aleutians I think, the aircraft became crippled over the ocean, another time in the South Pacific she had virus pneumonia, and spent days in a hospital, it was near critical when she checked in. She still around, 96 Years Old.

I found the cousin to that shirt: even has the 503rd PIR Jump Wing Oval. The 503rd was with the 11th Airborne in Germany from sometime in 1956 to March 1957. That's quite the Laundry Tag, never seen one that before, a specially made embroidered tape, no doubt made at the same time as the NAME Tape. That would be my guess Bob seeing that this shirt is from post 1955 by virtue of the small 1955 Specialists ranks, at this time the 11th Abn Div is stationed in West Germany.
