M1917Ranger Posted March 21, 2008 #1 Posted March 21, 2008 I've got a small truck group related to above (no uniform). Anyone on here have USAAS in Italy items, information, etc? I'd love to touch base on the topic - new territory for me. Best Regards, M1917Ranger
atb Posted March 22, 2008 #2 Posted March 22, 2008 I've got a small truck group related to above (no uniform). Anyone on here have USAAS in Italy items, information, etc? I'd love to touch base on the topic - new territory for me. Best Regards, M1917Ranger I have a book published in 1967 called The History of the United States Army Ambulance Service with the French and Italian Armies 1917-1918-1919. It gives much information on organization, training and overseas service. It gives the history (as much as is known) of each individual unit and has group photographs of many of them, too. What section or unit do you need information about? I can see if the book has anything.
BEAST Posted March 22, 2008 #3 Posted March 22, 2008 I am very interested in the US Army Ambulance Sections. Please post your grouping when you get a chance! Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana) sent one of its sections to Italy and I have a history of all the different sections. Please post the name and unit and we will try to help.
Jumpin Jack Posted March 22, 2008 #4 Posted March 22, 2008 Some years back I interviewed a WWII Vet of the "American Field Ambulance Service" who had served in Italy at the age of 18. I was able to pick up his shoulder flashes. What was interesting was the fact that this was the same unit that Hemmingway served in during WWI, giving birth to the novel "For Whom the Bell Toll". Additionally, he gave me a photo of his ambulance bearing the title, and well shot up. Jack
frederick Posted March 22, 2008 #5 Posted March 22, 2008 Gentlemen, Have a veteran society badge related to the Ambulance Service in WWI. Was going to post it in the Veterans Organizations section, but it may also apply here. Know little about the group, other than what is evident from the badge, and believe the group probably died out post-WWII. Have only seen this version of the badge which looks like 1920s manufacture.
Pbaczuk Posted May 2, 2024 #6 Posted May 2, 2024 Did the WW1 ambulance service have its own field bear? I have this canvas bag marked Italian Ambulance Service.
The Rooster Posted May 8, 2024 #7 Posted May 8, 2024 Dont know if its from Italy but I have this helmet.
atb Posted May 9, 2024 #8 Posted May 9, 2024 I have a M1910 canteen, cup, and cover set with the cover marked to "AMB SEC 566." This section served in Italy. This was the section in which the actor Adolphe Menjou served. The film role I know him best from is "Paths of Glory."
AustinO Posted May 10, 2024 #9 Posted May 10, 2024 Robert L Buell from Rochester NY served with the French in SSU 15 for six months, then became a French artillery officer. Resigned his commission in 1917 came home and attempted to join the AEF air service in France later that year. I don't think he went to Italy, but forum member Croix de Guerre might be able to help you with more details as he's the expert. Buell was a Harvard grad and is probably mentioned in their book on WWI veterans.
Croix de Guerre Posted May 10, 2024 #10 Posted May 10, 2024 On 5/8/2024 at 11:37 AM, The Rooster said: Dont know if its from Italy but I have this helmet. No, not from the Italian theater.
Pbaczuk Posted May 10, 2024 #11 Posted May 10, 2024 Here is the thread where your mention originated.
