Thor996 Posted April 10, 2013 #1 Posted April 10, 2013 Any help Identifying this building and what possible location it was in would be greatly apprecaited. The flag next to the US flag has 94th Signal Company on it. Thank you.

Problem there my friend, Company level units were non color bearing, thus they would not have colors of this type, a Regimental/Battalion Flag ie Color, they would only have a Guidon. Did you perchance mean the 94th Signal Battalion? now that's a unit who would have a flag/color of this type.
Sabrejet Posted April 10, 2013 #3 Posted April 10, 2013 Definitely European-style architecture...probably French. Apart from that.....?! Maybe if you could look up the unit's history it would document where they set up their various HQs?
Thor996 Posted April 11, 2013 Author #4 Posted April 11, 2013 patches- yes it is battalion- that was my late night half asleep error.
patches Posted April 11, 2013 #5 Posted April 11, 2013 OK 94th Signal Battalion that helps us a bit now, from what I found thus far was that the 94th Signal Battalion was first a part of 3rd Army then a part of 1st Army. http://www.wartimememoriesproject.com/ww2/view.php?uid=209025 Bear in mind, that this unit should not be confused with the current 94th Signal Battalion which was formed from the old 94th Infantry Division's 94th Signal Company in 1959. I imagine the WWII era 94th Signal Battalion was either inactivated after WWII ended, never to be activated again, or it was redisignated, with a completely differant Signal Battalion carrying it's lineage and honors today. A vet of this unit gives an interview, the unit was also involved at Remagen Brigde http://library.uncw.edu/capefearww2/voices/metsch105.html More on their involvment at Remagen, it was awarded a DUC/PUC. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/WORLDWAR2/2002-07/1027885515 Now I know none this IDs the building location but at least we have some frame of reference for this unit.
Jeeper704 Posted April 11, 2013 #6 Posted April 11, 2013 Was first thinking the Chateaubriant area. Do you have any other photos showing part of this building or any information? Erwin
468abnarm Posted April 11, 2013 #7 Posted April 11, 2013 Was trying to find some info on the building in the Martelange area when I came across the attached. Another case of starting to look for one thing and then finding some thing else. 385th Bomb Group Monument.
BulgeRemagen Posted October 31, 2023 #8 Posted October 31, 2023 The building in the photo is Haus Ernich which overlooked the Rhine and Remagen Bridge. It was occupied by the 94th Signal Battalion. From the history of the 94th Signal Battalion also states "Parts of the house were still being used by the 7th ARMORED DIVISION and the 14th MECHANIZED CAVALRY REGIMENT while ack-ack units were scattered about the estate". Below is the Haus Ernich today. The 94th Signal Battalion were assigned to the 3rd Corps from Oct 1944 through Dec 1945. They were initially attached to the 3rd Army and participated in their first engagement taking Fort Jean D'Arc Metz France on Dec 13 1944. The Battle of the Bulge started Dec 16th and the 3rd Corps was sent to plug the southern front line of the Bulge stationed in Arlon Belgium, 20 miles south of Bastogne. The 4th Armored Div was part of the 3rd Corp and were the first to open up Bastogne and 94th first to make communication with 101st in Bastogne. By Feb 1945 the 3rd Corp was assigned to the 1St Army (including 94th Signal Battalion) and participated in the taking of the Bridge at Remagen in which they earned the President Unit Citation. By April after the Ruhr Pocket win the 3rd Corps and 94th were reassigned back to the 3rd Army. By Oct 1945 when General Patton was move aside to the 15th Army the 3rd Corps and 94th Signal Battalion were also assigned to the 15th Army. The 94th Signal Battalion was disbanded at end of Dec 1945.

BulgeRemagen Posted November 3, 2023 #11 Posted November 3, 2023 Dave - Thanks for posting the photo. Was a great find for me during my research. Attached is a color version of the 94th Signal Battalion flag and additional photos of Haus Ernich and an additional quote from the History of the 94th about the house. There was a movie made in 1969 titled the Bridge at Remagen. It was not a great movie. But it did have a scene of what I later came to understand was based on the view from Haus Ernich. Per the 94th Signal Battalion Hisotry: " As a greeting at Haus Ernich, after general house cleaning, a ' V-bomb landed nearby. Also German 88's were dropped in for good measure. No damage done. The front of the living room was all glass, which with mechanical means, slide down into the ground. When down, the room became a patio overlooking the spacious grounds and lovely view of the Rhine." Peter An update about the Schloss or Haus Ernich. I had the opportunity to visit Germany/Luxembourg and Belgium back in November 2024. I was able to take a few photo's of the Schloss Ernich today. It sits high over the Rhine River with a magnificent view down the Rhine to where the Ludenorff or Bridge at Remagen once stood. Below the house and the view from the patio.

I had taken this photo of the Schloss Ernich that the 94th Signal Battalion billeted during the taking of the Remagen Bridge. The photo was black and white. I dropped it into the SW and how it could take a 80 year old B/W photo and actually get the colors right !! it got the 94th SG BN flag colors correct, amazing. And a similar view in November 2024, note the large bush which I was told are over a 100 yrs old.
