I picked up this photo in Hannibal, Missouri, several years ago. The inscription on the reverse reads:

"At this writing Date 8/20/1987

Sgt. Cecil L. Gillert

Reg. U.S. Army

I pick[ed] up this Picture During the Invasion of Germany on or about the 14th[?] or 24th March 1945

at the town of Wesel Germany

On the Rhine River

There was a large airborne drop there."

Of all the souvenirs I might have brought back, had I been in Germany in '45, I'm not sure I would have snagged a World War I-period photo, but I'm glad Cecil did.

That is cool. I have a veteran friend of the 321st glider field artillery who was also into photography as a hobby so along with taking his own photos during the war....he picked up German photos as well. One real photo post card portrait is of an enlisted Wehrmacht soldier who appears to have crossed eyes. My friend Tom wrote something on the back like "look at this superman" and sent it home to his family. He still has it and we still chuckle about it.
