Steindaddie Posted March 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2013 Had lunch today with a 97 year old gent who served as gunnery officer aboard USS Randolph in WW2. Here are a few of his souvenirs he wanted placed in a good home. The aluminum model/ashtray is a type we've seen on the forum. He was a Randolph plankowner, and at the ship's commisioning, the skipper, Captain Felix Baker, presented ashtrays to his department heads. The clock is from a TBF Avenger that was battle damaged and pushed over the side in 1945. Clock still works fine. The dummy .50 cal projectile? Well, he was the gunnery officer. Steindaddie Posted March 27, 2013 Author Share #2 Posted March 27, 2013 As gunnery officer, he chose his own personal headgear. The stitching is a bit faded and worn. Reads: "Gun Club"
Steindaddie Posted March 27, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted March 27, 2013 He stumped me for a minute with this one, but I finally figured out it was a cross section of an aircraft propellor. In fact, it is from a Yokosuka P1Y, a Kamikaze plane that hit Randolph on 11 March 1945.
hink441 Posted March 27, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2013 Great stuff, that prop cross section is awesome. The ashtray is like one I have seen before, but still an incredible piece!! Thanks for posting. Chris
