These days they are just plain fun to play with.

 

Somewhere I have a video of my old cat Ricky Bobby playing with a squirrel in a tree and another of him being dive bombed by barn swallows.

Blackie was the battleship, HMS Prince of Wales's,  ship's cat in 1941.   On August 9, the battleship steamed into Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, Canada, with Churchill on board,  escorted by the destroyers HMS Ripley, HMCS Assiniboine and HMCS Restigouche.   While Britain was fighting the Axis on their home-front,  Churchill had crossed the U-boat patrolled North Atlantic for a top secret meeting with President  Franklin D. Roosevelt,  himself transported to NS Argentia, Newfoundland, by the heavy cruiser USS Augusta, escorted by the cruiser USS Tuscaloosa,  and five destroyers.    Churchill really liked cats for all his long life, and in his will he stated that there should always be a cat with four white paws and a white bib at his home Chartwell.   As the great one was preparing to disembark from his battleship to a waiting destroyer alongside,  USS McDougal,  that would carry him to meet FDR on Augusta, Blackie the seagoing tomcat  secured his place in history and worldwide catlore, when the cat also approached the gangway and Churchill bent down to give him a pat.  Some news accounts said Churchill was actually restraining Blackie from also heading over to the American destroyer. 

 

In honour of the success of the visit, that resulted in the signing of the Atlantic Charter, Blackie was renamed Churchill. Blackie survived the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales later that year and was taken to Singapore with the survivors.  Unfortunately,  when Singapore was evacuated the following year, he was probably out hunting and couldn't be found in time, before his humans had to flee the advancing Japanese.   Of course,  even they like cats ("neko") as much as anyone else, and hopefully Blackie made it through the war.

Churchill had Blackie,   but Roosevelt traveled to the conference, with his beloved Scottish terrier,  Fala,  seen here with him.   Fala probably approved of the destroyer, McDougal.
