History Man Posted March 24, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 24, 2013 I picked this up at the local flea market this morning, they are WW2 USN deck hats. All are in good shape, most have stenciling, all hardware present, and most are above a size 7 (3 are 7s). I seem to be coming across quite a bit of WW2 USN deck material recently. RustyCanteen Posted March 24, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 24, 2013 Nice finds! I can't quite make out the markings, but it wouldn't be surprising if some of the markings have to do with Naval Air Stations.

History Man Posted March 25, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted March 25, 2013 Thanks for the comments, I was happily surprised to see these sticking out of a large box on a dealers table. Does anyone know what the stampings in code mean on the backs of some of them? Philip
sigsaye Posted March 25, 2013 Share #9 Posted March 25, 2013 Rusty, didn't see any Naval Air related commands, Saw Amphibious Construction Battallion 1, Beach Master Unit 1, Naval Boat Group 1 and Special Boat Group 1. All West Coast units, all amphibious.
RustyCanteen Posted March 25, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 25, 2013 Rusty, didn't see any Naval Air related commands, Saw Amphibious Construction Battallion 1, Beach Master Unit 1, Naval Boat Group 1 and Special Boat Group 1. All West Coast units, all amphibious. Those are some nice units! Typically, all I ever saw in abundance were the ones marked up with NAS, and assorted aviation markings. So it's nice to see something different for a change.

History Man Posted March 25, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted March 25, 2013 Thanks sigsaye for the IDs, some interesting units! Port Hueneme is about an hour away from me. The man I bought them from does the "circuit" of Rose Bowl, Long Beach, etc and picks up a variety of military items so I am not sure where they came from originally. sigsaye Posted March 25, 2013 Share #13 Posted March 25, 2013 I remember that the Salvage Depot used to be in Imperial Beach, down by San Diego. I think there was another in Long Beach. As commands turn stuff in for replacement, it ends up there, sits around for awhile to allow active units to draw on it, and then eventualy dumped into the surplus system. When I was in SD, we would send details to IB for stuff all the time. We got lots of what I now know was WW2 stuff up into the 1980s. You just had to wade through piles of stuff and then sign for it. It was a way for units to get stuff they needed with out having to spend their operating funds as the stuff inn Salvage was free. We got tri walls of field jackets, foil weather jackets and rain gear. once got a crate with 100 brand new never issued MK1 knives wrapped in the waxed paper. That was some great trading material ther! The thing with Navy stuff is that, whileit may have been contracted in WW2, it may have sat on a shelf for decades before being issued to the fleet, floated around for a while, and then turned in to sit until some one else gets it, uses it and then turns it in. Still cool stuff though.
SEAL76 Posted March 25, 2013 Share #14 Posted March 25, 2013 DRMO was great place to pick up old vehicles to take out to the range and blow up. There were occaisonal treasures to be found out there. My son was a SEAL and in charge of training new guys and platoon workups. He did work at various ranges around San Diego (Coronado) and out at Niland. Many a navy and Marine Corps vehicle were destroyed out there.
