Another 9th Air Force PTC, as seen this time on an EM coat, of extra special note is the 89th Rolling W Division patch sewn on the lower cuff.

Commandant and instructors at the Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson, SC wearing the Third Army PTC.

Are you sure it is a "patch" type? here is the Third Army DUI. The images are fuzzy. Could it be the approved insignia?

I'm not 100% sure since the pictures are screen shots from a video and a little blurry. However, they do look like the crest of the Third Army patch as opposed to the DUI you show. I don't see any sign of the gold fleur-de-lis or the red border with the motto.

The Institute Of Heraldry http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Catalog/HeraldryMulti.aspx?CategoryId=3036&grp=2&menu=Uniformed%20Services says the DUI you posted was approved 10 October 1968. I'm not exactly sure of the date of the pictures I posted, but it seems like the video they came from was done around 1969 or 1970.

Here's another World War II portrait of a 3rd Infantry Division soldier wearing the patch type crest. Notice that despite having a Combat Infantryman Badge, he is wearing two U.S. collar discs rather than the Infantry disc.

Two more 3rd Division PTCs. WWII period.

The one on the left is interesting, he's a Tank Destroyer Crewman of the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, one Tech 3 Robert Dennin, yet he has choose the 3rd Div patch and patch type crests to wear, this would be I imagine because the 601st TD BN was attached for so long to the 3rd Div that it became a de facto part of the division.

You can't see his right sleeve, and don't know what, if anything, is being worn there.

The man on the left, the T/4 (an error on my part as I listed him as a Tech 3 in the above caption) is theTD man.The other guy with the CIB has a combat patch, can you make it out. In any event he's Tech 4 William Toomey 15th Inf, Third Recon Battle Patrol ( are you familar with this unit tred, was it a Divisional level unit?) and he also has down as serving in the 3rd Signal Company.

2nd Cavalry Division SSI and patch type crests being worn by Sgt. Clifford Daws of the 92nd Reconnaissance Squadron

Good one Sean, this will be another example of the PTC being worn pre-war or very early war. The 2nd Cav Div's 92nd Rcn Sqd was inactivated along with the rest of the 2nd Cav Div in July 1942, the 2nd Cav Div is reactivated again in February 1944 as an exclucively Black Division, this time it's Recon unit is the 35th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Cld)

In fact the 2nd Cav Div pre war was talked about a couple of years ago, a real eye opener on the PTC's wear prior to the late/post war period.

2nd Armored Division patch type crest worn by a Vietnam combat infantry veteran early 1970's. The Adjutant General Corps branch insignia suggests the unit of assignment was the 2nd Administration Company.
