I have what appear to be a WWII US Navy eight button white CPO's jacket, the strange thing is that it has a star over the rating. The star is not part of the rating but a separate piece sewn over it. The first thought would be Senior Chief except for two things, the star has one point up rather than one point down like the Senior Chief and there was at least 10 years between the time the eight button jacket was replaced by the six button one and when the Senior Chief rank was created. Any one know what this star means.

It's still a Senior Chief. The star was just put on wrong. It was a common mistake. The eight button white coat was not replaced witha a six button version. They continued to be worn until the 1970's.

I have a tan Master Chief's uniform with the separate stars so they were done that way.

Yes, the stars were seperate for several years after the rates were created. Officially, they were to point down. However, quite often they ended up being put on point up.
