I personally didn’t read much into ‘special’ other than the fact that airborne is ‘special’ as in non-standard.

Down visiting my daughter in FLA, so I breezed up to Kaufman’s Surplus in Sampson, AL. Popped into their patch room. Woow-za!! I was there seven years ago and Was able to “wander” around In the front portion of the warehouse and saw palletized boxes of bulk patch boxes. It’s gated now. This is prob a smidge of what’s buried in there. I still had fun!

Found another very early dated box of U.S. Made Fully Embroidered Merrowed Edge patches like the 173rd Airborne Brigade one, here the 1st Logistical Command, January 1967. Very curious that these merrowed edge patches as they were made starting in late 66 early 67 weren't used yet, or used to any great degree at least, till mid mid-sh 1968, we guess they sat on them as old stocks were used up or almost used up right!

Here's an interesting one, a 1990 dated box 470th Military Intelligence Brigade Subdued Type, January 1990, still with no plastic coating, we guess the plastic coating start around this time right, or a little earlier back in the lat-sh 80s, if so in the late-sh 80s then not every maker used the coating, at least not right away.

Found a bunch, these over at Overlooked Surplus, they did a good job in posting the rears of the patches to see boobin, they're selling them as loose single items, but for our purposes, great timeline references.

6th Infantry Division, dated? 459+ April 1959???, we assume this was made in 1950s right because of the FSN, Federal Stock Number.

Stock numbers

195? - 1956 example of stock number "72-R-307-112" ????

1957 – 1975 FSN (Federal stock number), 11-digit number

1975 – present NSN (National stock number), 13-digit number
