2nd Infantry Division

Here are two patches that are in my collection. The one on the left is the 20's felt on felt 2nd ID Patch. I am looking for a 1st Battalion 9th Infantry Manchu patch, if anyone knows where there is one for sale. (there is no manchu on the patch) The 1/9 INF patch is a red felt pentagon with the star and indianhead sewn onto it. If you look closely at the WWI 2/17 patch it is all felt. Made it easier to mass produce is one hypothesis. Also note the hand stitching on this patch. No doubt about being hand made. I am still a learner after all.

The WW1 Second division Patch design was derived from the indian on the Augustus St Gaudens desinged $5.00 Gold piece. The shape and color of the background are used to differentiate between units as follows:

 

I. Division level activities -- Shield

A. Division HQ -- Black

B. 1st Field Signal Battalion -- Red

C. 2nd HQ Troop -- Yellow

D. 2nd HQ Train and Military Police -- Blue

E. 4th Machine Gun Battalion -- Purple

F. 2nd Supply Train -- Green

 

II. 3rd Infantry Brigade -- Hexagon

A. Brigade HQ -- Black

B. 5th Machine Gun Battalion -- Purple

 

III. 9th Infantry Regiment -- Pentagon

*** Division members selected for the special presidential honor guard for President Wilson and the AEF Composite Regiment also wore the indian head and star with no background.

Wow, thanks for providing this extremely helpful information! This is the first time I've ever seen the rather complicated and confusing 2nd USA Div/4th Marine Brigade helmet insignias delineated. This is very useful, thank you. Is there a particular book or source that you found this? Thanks.
