p2tharizo Posted March 1, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2013 I don't normally touch items of historical significance, but this sight was a rusted heap, and I felt it deserved more. My plans are to paint it to look as it once did (when I find out what color, black, gray, etc.). I also have sniffed out a front sight, and have a great shadowbox idea. Something to the effect of a spaced sight picture leading a BF-109 or FW-190. Maybe a pair of pinback aerial gunner wings at the bottom of the frame. The idea looks good in my head, anyway! The trick is going to be doing it without it turning out cheesy. The stamping reads: SIGHT GUNRING TYPE B-13 44-5387 Anyway, now for something I realized today....I believe the bottom number, which is stamped in a different fashion from the other writing, to be an aircraft serial number. The format is correct, however I can't find any record of that particular serial number. Any help or ideas on any of this would be much appreciated. I would love to hear from anyone who has access to a B-17 in their area-I'd love to know if the sight has similar stampings!

Sabrejet Posted March 6, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 6, 2013 I'm sure this WW2 docu-drama I posted last week features a short sequence where they demonstrate these...or similar... sights in use. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/169196-the-rear-gunner-1943/
