Interesting USMC dog tag

Just got this in today. I've only seen a few examples of USMC tags with this typeset. This Marine was difficult to research because of his common name, but from what I did find, he enlisted in 1947 and spent a hell of a lot of time in the brig, once for being AWOL for a month.

This shape tag was used by the USN and USMC from the 1920s through the early part of the Korean War, the only difference was the switch from a single hole to a double hole tag in the early 1940s.

As far as the stamping, looks like the lettering was done with a standard US Army machine as opposed to a USN/USMC machine. Hard to know why, though. The serial number style I've never seen before on any military dog tag, I wouldn't begin to know where to venture a guess it came from.

As far as the high serial number, by the end of WWII they were up to seven digits, though they are rare to find for Korea or WWII. Tags in the 800s and 900s were quite common in WWII, 800s for 17 year old enlistees and 900s for draftees.

Good luck in your research -

Best,

Bill K.

that sounds quite unpleasant for me :o

Hey Brig,

From what I have seen of them they are unpleasent! Of course I have really only seen two, MCAS Cherry Point and one at Camp Lajeune.

Before you get any ideas, I picked up prisoners and escorted them, not

being one.
