Hi

Here we have an M40 single decal Heer helmet which was picked up by a GI during the liberation of Cherbourg.

The decal on the helmet is only just visable, the helmet maker is Quist.

Written on the headband is the words "Souvenir of Cherbourg June 13th 1944"

This helmet came as part of a group with a M-1 helmet with a vertical ETO bar and LT striped painted on it.

I bet a bunch of helmets were picked up in Cherbourg. I've got a Navy M42 mailed back from a bandsman in the 35th Division, I don't have any photos. It has a cardboard mailing tag on the chin strap loop and had the paperwork stuck above the liner. I was a poor starving college studentwhen I got it, I was a part-time janitor and a friend of a coworker found it. He was a janitor in an office building and he picked up a trash can in the florist shop one the first floor. The can was heavy so he looked inside and there was a German helmet. It put me back $20 and we were both happy.
