Opinel Posted October 2, 2023 #227 Posted October 2, 2023 Hello everybody, I need an advice. I found this one on a French auction site, and I want to have your opinion. Is it a good one or a false? The seller want 1600€ for it, is it a correct price? Thank you in advance. Regards, Marc

Regards, Marc Marc I don't consider myself an expert in the original Ben Baker SOG knives as I've only handled a very few of them personally and as yet haven't run across one available that I would add to my collection. So you should wait for others here to chime in. From what I do see I wouldn't rush to obtain this knife before hearing from the experts. This knife doesn't seem to me to resemble closely enough the originals, and the quality of manufacture isn't up to what SOG Specialty Knives has been producing for the last several decades. Certainly the Special Forces logo and the inscription wouldn't have occurred on a genuine knife while still in country.
Opinel Posted October 2, 2023 #229 Posted October 2, 2023 That's Ok for me. Thank you very much for answer, I'm skipping my turn for this knife...........
opseccc Posted October 6, 2023 #230 Posted October 6, 2023 Marc, If you go back through the pages of this forum you will see what correct CISO SOG knives look like. The knife you have pictured looks wrong in several areas. The guard looks off compared to the guards of the other correct knives. There are variations to the guards of correct knives but yours looks different in the overall shape. Second, the Special Forces (SF) Crest is upside down, compared to all the other Presentation knives. The SF Crest should be positioned so that it is upright when the blade tip is pointed down. The sheath can give a lot of evidence to being correct from the snaps. If you have access to the knife, look at the inside of the snaps. There are markings that identify them correctly. Without seeing them on you example, I can't say for sure but suspect it is also fake. Overall, I would not purchase it as an original. Just me.
Opinel Posted October 14, 2023 #231 Posted October 14, 2023 Hello, thanks for answer. It's very useful to be there to avoid buying false knives!!
Opinel Posted December 30, 2023 #232 Posted December 30, 2023 Hi Folks, Some days ago, I bought a SOG knife. Just want your opinion about. Thanks in advance, Regards, Marco
Spy vs Spy Posted March 8, 2024 Author #234 Posted March 8, 2024 Not an original CISO SOG knife. Best Martin
Spy vs Spy Posted March 8, 2024 Author #236 Posted March 8, 2024 Marco (Opinel) Congrats to your find. You got yourself an original Vietnam era 5th Group Mess Association knife with Aluminum fittings (Pommel & Crossguard). Knife has the correct sheath as well and matches the wear of the knife. Best Martin
FT.Monmouth1943 Posted August 22, 2024 #237 Posted August 22, 2024 Recently acquired this knife and was curious if anyone here knows what exactly I have. It’s similar to a 7in recon knife, but isn’t an exact match. Came with a Randall sheath, and the knife was in this MACV issued box with the writing on it. Any help in identifying the model and who made it would be greatly appreciated!
jeremy69 Posted November 18, 2024 #239 Posted November 18, 2024 Added my first SOG knife. Came from a Capt. Joel Pelis who was a trainer for FANK.
VNAMVET70 Posted November 19, 2024 #240 Posted November 19, 2024 Nice "fat guard" and sheath ! Congratulations.
Spy vs Spy Posted November 21, 2024 Author #241 Posted November 21, 2024 @ Jeremy69 I was there when the veteran Mr Pelis came over with his FANK SOG knife. Congrats to your first documented SOG knife. Best Martin

Spy vs Spy Posted December 13, 2024 Author #243 Posted December 13, 2024 Post a picture or answer me in the PM I sent you and I’ll look at it. Best Martin
Spy vs Spy Posted February 10 Author #245 Posted February 10 I see you too got a crush for the 5000series Dave. I think I got 5 or 6 as well. The 5000series is a rare knife, I would say it’s even more scarce than the 7” Recon SOG. That’s just my humble opinion. Great looking blades, and remember you can’t have to many 5000series David. Best Martin
Spy vs Spy Posted February 12 Author #247 Posted February 12 Opseccc, Beautiful 5000series in nice used condition. Love the it has so much of the Greenish Lacker left on the Pommel and Cross Guard. What number do you have on the Pommel? See if we got it in our list, it’s updated after the book. Thanks for posting your 5000series. It’s a keeper. Best Martin
Spy vs Spy Posted February 12 Author #248 Posted February 12 Sorry guys, meant to say *lacquer. / Martin
