Championhilz Posted February 16, 2013 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2013 I took these pictures last weekend of a small display at the Vicksburg National Military Park on soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor for their service during the Vicksburg Campaign. Henry H. Taylor served in Company C, 45th Illinois Infantry. On June 25, 1863, a mine was exploded under the 3rd Louisiana Redan - a huge hole was opened in the Confederate line, and the 45th Illinois charged into it - Taylor was the color bearer for the regiment, and bravely planted his flag on the enemy works. Charles W. Rundle served in Company A, 116th Illinois Infantry. On May 22, 1863, he was part of the "forlorn hope" - a group of volunteers that led the attack on the Confederate Stockade Redan carrying planks and ladders that the following troops could use to get into the enemy fortification. Casualties among the forlorn hope were heavy.
